Santa Cruz has been commissioned many times by their artists and celebrity collectors for custom versions of this classic pre-war design that they got the message. In that spirit, SCGC has introduced the RS Model. It is much more than a tribute to Roy Smeck, the guitar virtuoso of 1937 who performed with these deluxe stage instruments that were set up for Hawaiian playing styles. This beautiful custom retro offering incorporates the modifications requested by modern players to make vintage instruments compatible with contemporary fretting styles.
The RS is designed for a commanding presence. SCGC’s specially tapered bracing and body size give this instrument considerable headroom to be driven hard and still maintain tonal integrity, while the slightly shallower custom body depth adds more midrange focus. This is a great variation with added comfort, just as Roy’s guitars had many different variables searching for varied tones and projection The neck is designed for maximum string space at the nut (1-13/16 inches) to allow for very clean fingering. The right hand is also given more space, 2-5/16 inches, between the outside strings. The satisfying playability is enhanced by the suppleness of the 24 3/4″ short scale string length. They employed some of our hallmark lutherie skills to manipulate the sound hole size, bridge plate position and top deflection to achieve an ideal EQ for the RS, a big embraceable companion with a really pretty face.
The custom RS has all the looks and feel of the vintage builds. This features and Adirondack Spruce top and Adirondack Spruce bracing constructed with Hot Hide Glue and paired with premium Mahogany back and sides. The vibrant vintage sunburst is highlighted by the colorful S29 fancy top purfling, Ivoroid bindings, Ebony fretboard, straight bridge and headstock overlay and more.
