A beauty from The Martin Custom Shop, this custom J-42 guitar was crafted in close collaboration with the Custom Shop team at Martin’s factory in Nazareth, PA. Together, we hand-selected an exceptional set of highly figured Hawaiian Koa for the top, back, and sides, then carefully chose each specification to bring this unique custom guitar to life. Its visual elegance is highlighted by the Paua Pearl 42-style top border and rosette, Koa fretboard and bridge inlays with snowflake motifs, and a CFM block headstock inlay all framed with Paua Pearl accents. Cocobolo bindings grace the body, fretboard, and headstock, while Adirondack Spruce Golden Era forward-shifted scalloped bracing and Gold butterbean tuners complete the list of standout custom features.
Features include 1-piece Genuine Mahogany modified low oval neck, Black Ebony fretboard and bridge, Gold Grover open-geared tuners, Cocobolo heelcap and wedge, Ebony headstock overlay, 45-style multi-color chevron backstrip, white pins with Paua Pearl dots, Bone nut and saddle, 1 3/4″ nut width, 2 5/32″ saddle spacing and more.
The J model is Martin’s jumbo-bodied 0000 (M) size, distinguished by a deeper body than the standard M. Originally derived from a 16″ archtop design which is larger than a 000 and wider than a dreadnought, Martin adapted the shape with a flattop creating the 0000. While the M retained a thinner depth, the J deepens the body to dreadnought proportions. The result is a powerful, resonant tone with the warmth and low-end of a dreadnought, balanced by the clarity and articulation of a 000—arguably Martin’s most versatile body shape.
