This Tony Rice Pro Master Custom Model from Santa Cruz Guitars is a rare bird indeed. Built with the same specs as Tony’s original Santa Cruz that Richard Hoover designed for him in the late 70’s, this master model features extremely rare 130+ year old ‘vault grade’ old growth Brazilian Rosewood that was cut down in the late 1800’s and was over 400 years old when it fell. Vault wood is literally the best of the best tonewood that Santa Cruz’ Richard Hoover has been stashing away for over 50 years and put literally in a vault. This is the rarest of rare, the best of the best from Santa Cruz. The top is old growth German Spruce with larger soundhole- the same kind of wood that was used on Mr. Rice’s personal guitar. The star of this build is an original Santa Cruz label signed by Tony Rice himself many decades ago. This is one of only a few unused labels that Richard and crew rediscovered hidden in an envelope. An amazing find.
To enhance the playability, a shorter (25.25 inch) scale and Tony’s slim neck profile with 1 11/16″ nut width provide fast and effortless action. The heirloom tone woods and intelligent design make this instrument the quintessential contemporary bluegrass dreadnought. In Tony’s own words, “This is a guitar you can go to war with.”
Other Tony Rice Pro features include Ivoroid full body, fretboard and headstock bindings, herringbone top purfling and rosette, Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay, large soundhole, Ebony fretboard and bridge, Waverly Gold tuners with butterbean knobs, Mahogany neck, dalmation pickguard, zipper backstrip, bone nut and saddle and more.
