A nod to the traditional slope-shoulder guitars of the 1930s and ’40s, the Huss & Dalton DS Custom is designed for brawny power with premium tonewoods and dashing good looks. A showpiece at the Huss & Dalton booth at the 2023 NAMM Show this April, the DS is built with colorful African Padauk back and sides Paired with a Bearclaw Lutz Spruce top with classy necklace fretboard inlay, full Maple bindings and more.
African Padauk is a vibrant and colorful wood with signature reddish/ orange hue and is slightly harder and heavier than Indian Rosewood with a stable, strong tone. Many builders claim Padauk is a good substitute for Brazilian rosewood. Called a wonderful “musical wood”, it produces a robust and deeper sound, a strong bass, rich with overtones. Lutz Spruce (Picea x Lutzi) is a wonderfully light and projecting top wood that is a natural occurring hybrid of Sitka Spruce and White Spruce. Blending the positive characteristics of these (and its cousin, Engelmann spruce) together equals the robust tonal output found usually only in Adirondack spruce. This wood is a wonderful pairing with the Rosewood like Padauk (a first for Huss & Dalton) and yields a warm, powerful, clear and balanced tone.
Adding a classy touch of flare, Huss & Dalton’s ‘necklace’ inlay set in Abalone Pearl adorns the fretboard while the Firestripe pickguard compliments the colorful Padauk and the figured Maple body, fretboard and headstock bindings tops off this very unique build.
Other features include Ebony fretboard, bridge and headstock overlay, black/ white top purfling and rosette, Mahogany neck with custom 1 11/16″ nut width, Nickel Waverly tuners, Padauk heelcap, figured Maple wedge, and more.
