The Collings 0-41 12-fret custom is reminiscent of the turn of the century builds of over 100 years ago. Timeless and classy, this visually stunning and amazing sounding comfortable build was a showpiece at the 2024 Fretboard Summit in Chicago in August. The very first and only of it’s kind from Collings, this build features an old growth Ancient Sinker Bald Cypress top that has been submerged for over 400 years. Aging for centuries in a mineral rich environment has aided to the ghostly greenish hue while it cured naturally all that time. A light weight and percussive wood, Ancient Cypress is akin to Englemann Spruce in tone and clarity but with the punch of more stiffer Spruces due to it’s age. Paired with a stunning set of Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides and dressed with 41-style Abalone Pearl top trim and rosette with full Ivoroid bound body, neck and headstock.
Features include bland Ebony fretboard and pyramid bridge, 3-style multi-color back strip, Nickel Waverly tuners with Ebony buttons, Mahogany neck with slotted headstock, Ivoroid heelcap and wedge, Ebony pins and more. With a comfortable short 24 7/8″ scale length, custom 1 3/4″ nut width and 2 3/16″ saddle spacing at the bridge, this model is well suited to both finger style and strumming techniques and excels as a recording instrument.
With softer contours and a longer body dimension than the 0 14-Fret model, the Collings 0 12-Fret has a balanced and full tone with slightly more bass and overall volume. First introduced in 1854, the articulate tone and convenient size of the “0” 12-Fret body dimensions have remained popular to this day. The tonewood combination on the guitar is both exceptional and unique, with a big sound with rounded tone for the size with presence and balance combined.
