In the late 1920s, 12-fret, slotted head guitars began their historic transformation into the solid headstock and alternate body sizes found in guitars still to this day. This is a stunning custom OMS 12-Fret Custom, harkening back to the days of the early larger body slotted head Hawaiian guitars. Built by our our friends at Bourgeois Guitars in Lewiston, ME. this custom OMS features a stunning set of Premium Hawaiian Koa top, back and sides with flamed and ripple throughout. Custom Brazilian Rosewood fretboard, bridge and headstock overlay along with matching Brazilian Rosewood bindings, backstrip and custom segmented tile rosette with Maple border add deep contrast to the natural color Koa.
Adirondack Spruce bracing Animal Protein glue construction under the hood drive this very versatile build, while features like Waverly Gold 3-per side tuners with Snakewood buttons, Mahogany slotted headstock with logo on back with volute, black/ white soloist style purfling, Brazilian Rosewood heelcap and wedge, Abalone Pearl square and diamond inlays, Maple/ black back and side purfling, Ebony pins with Pearl dots, 1 3/4″ nut width, 2 5/16″ saddle spacing and more.
We think of the Bourgeois OMS as the 12-fret version of the OM, as opposed to the other way around. It boasts all the tonal properties of their OM, with the added power and fullness of a 12-fret. This design places the soundhole closer to the waist of the guitar aiding in maximum vibration. By locating the bridge at the widest part of the lower bout, it can most efficiently drive the top. This throwback design allows maximum power with minimum playing effort, while affording a loose, open quality to the sound. The OMS combines these throwback features with a slotted headstock and a 25.5” scale neck to recreate a design still coveted by fingerstylists – and a few flatpickers.
