Here at Down Home Guitars, we love unique, custom built guitars and here is a perfect example why. This masterfully crafted H13 with premium tonewoods and flashy good looks is a perfect example of the custom builds by The Santa Cruz Guitar Company. You will be seen as well as heard with this dashing beauty. 100+ year old Old Growth Mahogany back and sides is paired with a Swiss Moon Spruce sunburst top, wood that was cut around the last full moon of autumn in the Swiss Alps when the tree’s sap content is at the lowest and ideal stage for harvesting. Allowed to rest in the forest till spring, this properly acclimates the wood before any milling of the lumber. The eye catching feature is the custom Mother of Pearl century block inlays along with contrasting cowboy rope top trim and rosette and full body, neck and headstock bindings.
Other features include backlit tortoise full body, fretboar and headstock bindings, Adirondack Spruce bracing with hot hide glue construction under the hood, Ebony fretboard and pyramid bridge, custom backlit tortoise headstock overlay, backstrip, heelcap and wedge strip, Gold Waverly engraved tuners, Mahogany V shaped buffed neck with slotted headstock, Ebony pins with Pearl dots, Ivoroid script logo, 1 3/4″ nut width and more.
The H13 is Santa Cruz’s 13-fret deeper body build. Similar to a 000 but in the vein of the early 20th century Nick Lucas models, SCGC’s concept for the H13 is to achieve power beyond what would be expected in a small-bodied guitar. Two fundamental lutherie tricks make this possible: a longer string length (more downward pressure at the saddle) and more air space via a deeper body (increased volume and bass response). To place the bridge in the optimal position for power and maintain the longer string length, the neck needs to join the body at the 13th fret. This all adds up to a great build and it’s a great base on which to start a unique custom.
