A one-of-kind D-42 Tree of Life custom dreadnought crafted by Collings Guitars in Austin, TX features a soundboard cut from old-growth, reclaimed Alaskan ‘Blue’ Sitka Spruce that spent decades underwater in remote Alaska. This custom dreadnought has a unique story woven into its fibers that few other guitars can claim. The top comes from a log that was used as part of a floating logging camp on the coast of Alaska and secured with iron spikes. Years of oxidization has given the wood an earthy hue that accentuates the grain of the wood. The sugars in the wood have become crystalline, creating an openness and response that only decades of maturity can provide. The back and sides are a rare set of highly contrasting African Ebony (Diospyros mespiliformis) from the savannah of Eastern Africa that instantly stands out with the peanut butter and chocolate like striping. To match these amazing woods, the Abalone Pearl Tree of Life Vine fretboard and headstock inlays along with 42-style top purfling and rosette and full figured Hawaiian Koa bindings grace this beauty with eye popping effect.
Other features include Striped African Ebony headstock overlay, black Ebony fretboard and bridge, Honduran Mahogany neck with volute, figured Koa heelcap and wedge, Gold Waverly tuners, Ebony pins with Pearl dots, tortoise pickguard, 1 23/32″ custom nut width and more.
This cannon of a dreadnought is all set for the bright lights of the big stage but will also fit perfectly in your own private collection. A true heirloom instrument.
