A standout piece at the 2023 Fretboard Summit luthier’s showcase in Chicago, IL this August, this striking custom SJ from Bourgeois Guitars has the pizazz and elegance that harkens back to the early turn of the century guitars from Larson Brothers, Orville Gibson and others. This vintage inspired small jumbo pairs an Aged Tone torrefied Adirondack Spruce black top with Flamed Maple back and sides with red Cordovan stain and full Ivoroid bindings to highlight all the edges. The oval sound hole (surprising enough is as large as the round large sound hole) with the classic Ball-and-Lozenge Pearl rosette, fretboard and headstock inlays were also used by Orville Gibson on early mandolins and guitars and is a pattern that dates back to Stradivarius in the 1700’s. The ‘Butterfly’ Ivoroid pickguard with black lines add to the classic look reminiscent to those found on Italian mandolins as well.
With a comfortable 15 3/8″ lower bout, the 25″ short scale length makes this build feel wonderful. The Aged Tone torrefied Adirondack Spruce braces and Animal Protein glue under the hood add warmth and vintage tone to this full sounding, and robust custom SJ.
Other features include Mahogany neck with matching Cordovan stain, Ebony fretboard and bridge, Nickel Waverly tuners with Ivoroid buttons, 1 23/32″ nut width and more.
