This OM3 Custom model is a great build with rare tonewood configuration from Collings. The back and sides are built with a premium set of Bois De Rose (Dalbergia maritima), a rare Rosewood from Madagascar. This striking wood has vivid magenta and violet/ purple characteristics with amazing robust exotic Rosewood tone. A perfect pairing for nthis OM is the old growth Ancient Sinker Bald Cypress top that has been submerged for over 3700 years! Aging for centuries in a mineral rich environment has aided to the ghostly greenish hue while it cured naturally all that time. A light weight and percussive wood, Ancient Cypress is akin to Englemann Spruce in tone and clarity but with the punch of more stiffer Spruces due to it’s age.
The OM3 build features Ivoroid full body, neck and headstock bindings, Abalone Pearl rosette, Waverly gold tuners, 3-style multi-colored chevron backstrip and blandk Ebony fretboard. Other Features include Ebony bridge, pre-war style bracing, Honduran Mahogany neck, Ebony headstock overlay, Ivoroid heel cap and wedge, black/ white multi-stripe top, back, headstock and wedge purfling, tortoise pickguard, 1 11/16″ nut width, 2 3/16″ saddle spacing, 25 1/2″ scale length and more.
‘OM’ stands for “Orchestra Model,” but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. Yet flatpickers also find it appealing, and when the graceful cutaway is added these OMs are often used by lead players who routinely explore all 20 frets much as they would on an electric guitar. The compact shape makes the Collings OM equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the relatively shallow body (barely over 4 inches deep) results in balanced tone and an immediate response.
