There are many great characteristics of Sinker Mahogany, and many reasons why we love this wood. First and foremost, it’s old wood. It’s been aging in a sort of time capsule, not rotting because it was buried in the mud at the bottom of a river. The rivers in Belize and central America were used by the British in the 1700’s and 1800’s to float these logs out of the rain forest to the coast. Some got caught up or sank and have been preserved there for the centuries by sinking in the mud. The created a rare situation where this wood slowly aged and matured over that time. Color and striping is another great characteristic/ by product of sunken wood. Some of these logs have soaked up minerals from the soil adding striking colorization to the woods.
