An amazing one of a kind Collings SJ Custom. With a soundboard cut from old-growth, reclaimed Alaskan Bearclaw ‘Blue’ Sitka Spruce that spent decades underwater in remote Alaska, this custom SJ-41 has a unique story woven into its fibers that few other guitars can claim. The top comes from a log that was used as part of a floating logging camp and secured with iron spikes. Years of oxidization has given the wood a dark, blueish/green earthy hue that accentuates the natural bearclaw figure of the wood. The sugars in the wood have become crystalline, creating an openness and response that only decades of maturity can provide.
Perfectly paired with an equally striking set of Cocobolo for the back and sides, the orange/ red hue with black streaks is a visually stunning contrast to the Blue Sitka. Fully bound in figured Hawaiian Koa, topped with Abalone Pearl 41 style purfling, rosette and modern diamond inlays and finished with Gold Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons this stunning original SJ is a true musical work of art. A timeless heirloom quality guitar.
The SJ is Collings’ version of what is commonly called a Small Jumbo. Although the 16 inch lower bout is slightly wider than a dreadnought, and the sides almost as deep, the tight curve at the waist creates in a very different sound chamber. Players looking for the bass and overall volume of a large guitar, but with lots of treble clarity and midrange crunch, often find just what they need in the curvaceous SJ. This wood combination truly highlights the depth and clarity of the SJ with stunning effect.
