Manuel Velazquez (1917-2014) was a world-class builder of the Spanish style guitar. Born in Puerto Rico in 1917, he built his first guitar at the age of 12. He made a name for himself building in New York City and Puerto Rico. Today, his guitars are sought and praised by professional guitarists from all parts of the world, many of whom consider his work second to none. The shape of the guitar and the depth of the body remained traditional throughout his life, patterned after Hauser’s guitars. A number of his colleagues have rated him as perhaps the greatest luthier working outside of Europe. Velazquez guitars have been owned by many notable guitarists, including Paul Simon, Jorge Morel, Rey de la Torre, Harry Belafonte, Ichiro Suzuki, Earl Klugh, and Eliot Fisk.
This is a very good/ excellent condition 1994 Velazquez built in his ‘retirement’ years living in Florida. Premium Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and European Spruce top give you the clarity, depth and growl that only comes from a world class Velazquez guitar. Brazilian Rosewood bindings, bridge and overlay, Ebony fretboard, original Sloane tuning machines and Oil Varnished body and French polish top. There are a few minor repairs- 2 back cracks that were expertly glued and did not require interior cleats, and some top dings from some playing seen in the right light as well as a small amount of finish wear on the binding, again hard to see.
