Dan Bourgeois has been on the forefront of new innovations in guitar building since he started. To the point that when he states his opinions, not to mention new ideas, people listen. The Bourgeois Aged Tone OM is just that. He is on the front lines in using torrefied tone woods, to the extent that now even the most skeptical builders are jumping on board. Not just that, Dana’s Aged Tone build is a combination of techniques to perfect this design that feels like an old bone with great note clarity and piano like balance. Using torrefied Adirondack for the top and braces, hide glue construction that vintage pre-wars and a unique Aged Tone thin finish, it achieves the ultimate goal of the tone of an aged guitar in a new build.
This OM takes it further by having a large soundhole on a deep body build. the first of it’s kind at Down Home Guitars. The sound jumps out of the body with a large robust low and mid with sweet mids and brilliant highs. From the first strum we new Dana had something special here.
Aged Tone
Guitar builders are using a technique called torrefaction to accelerate the wood-aging process for better tone and stronger instruments. Torrefaction is a process by which wood is heated in a controlled environment, cooking off the volatiles—the oils, sugars, and resins that naturally vacate the wood but only after many decades of drying. In his Aged Tone series, Dana Bourgeois offers dreadnoughts and OMs with torrefied sound- boards, finished with Isocyanate, a material that mimics the thinness and hardness of the aged nitrocellulose lacquer which, according to many builders, contributes to a vintage guitar’s tone. He binds the bracing with Hide Glue, the same material used on pre-war instruments and old violins that helps complete the package.
