Here’s another truly exceptional one-of-a-kind custom build from our friends at Santa Cruz Guitars! If you’re searching for a masterfully crafted instrument made with premium tonewoods with a story, look no further. This heirloom quality OM Grand features a stunning set of Waterfall Bubinga for the back and sides, aptly named for its dramatic, multi-dimensional rippling figure that resembles cascading water. Also known as African Rosewood, Bubinga hails from Central Africa and offers the bold, glassy punch of denser rosewoods, combined with the warmth and balance of Mahogany. The top is something extraordinary- a 2,000+ year-old set of Orcas Island Cedar, preserved at the bottom of a lake for over two millennia on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands off the coast of northwest Washington. No longer typical Cedar, this ancient ‘bog wood’ has undergone a natural transformation, taking on tonal properties more similar to clear, stiffer Spruces like Red Spruce or old Sitka, though it is a Cedar. The mineral-rich, low-oxygen environment where it lay submerged has resulted in a dense, resonant top wood with exceptional character, both sonically and historically.
The top is adorned with custom Blue Paua Pearl 42-style purfling and rosette, paired with custom Firefly burst finish and Dalmatian pickguard. The fretboard, headstock, and bridge are graced with an extended deluxe version of the stunning “Songbird and Vine” inlay in Blue Paua Pearl and Mother of Pearl. This is the first build ever of the motif with the vine extending from the 7th fret all the way to the fretboard’s end, mirrored by a matching inlay on the bridge. Framing this intricate inlay work is additional Blue Paua Pearl trim on the fretboard and headstock. Keeping with the water theme of the Waterfall Bubinga, sunken Cedar, Vine and Songbird inlay, the back is adorned with a custom handmade ‘canoe’ scrimshaw heelcap as well as the colorful Flag of Nations backstrip. Visually, this build is as stunning as it sounds. This custom OM Grand has richness and clarity, warmth and punch from the lightest touch, yet handles a pick with ease.
Features include full Ivoroid body, fretboard and headstock bindings, Ebony fretboard and bridge, Adirondack Spruce scalloped bracing with Hot Hide Glue construction, Mahogany satin finish neck, Ebony headstock overlay, Waverly Gold engraved tuners, Pearl logo, Ebony pins with Blue Paua Pearl dots, 1 3/4″ nut width and more.
Santa Cruz’s OM Grand is a bigger, lusher, louder sister to their extremely popular OM model. In comparison, the OM Grand embodies the same elegance, only in increased quantity of volume, projection and bass. The tone woods in this body size makes an extremely versatile guitar. You can hear the history at the lightest touch. Warm, balanced and clear.
