‘OM’ stands for “Orchestra Model,” but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings as well as flatpickers alike. The compact shape makes the Collings OM equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the relatively shallow body (barely over 4 inches deep) results in balanced tone and an immediate response.
This is a wonderful hybrid of the OM1 and OM2 models from Collings. Based on an OM1 build with tortoise bindings, dot inlays, simple Walnut back strip and Ebony overlay, we added Indian Rosewood for the back and sides, normally found on the OM2 models. Instead of the heeringbone found standard on the 2 models, we added classic rope purflings to the upgraded torrefied (baked) Sitka Spruce top along with Adirondack bracing. We kept the standard 1 11/16″ nut width for sheer comfort and playability, something we feel is increasingly harder to come by on an OM these days. A wonderful guitar with understated specs that is nothing short of spectacular. Business as usual with Collings Guitars.
