Collings Varnish is the ultimate finish option for tone. Hand rubbed oil varnish is painstaking process of applying very thin coats and letting it dry, sand repeat then polishing it to a high gloss. It ends up being a thinner finish than a sprayed nitroclellulose laquer and lets the guitar breathe. It is also a time tested process that has been used since the renaissance on violins and other instruments. It ends up giving the instrument a very open sound and allows the tone to jump from the instrument giving it a sound out of the box that would usually take a laquer guitar years to achieve. As looks go, varnish gives the guitar a vintage sheen where it gives the bindings, inlays etc a classic vintage tint that is unmistakable.
