TIM MAY & DAN MILLER

In Concert -Sunday October 24th

7:30pm  $10 ($5 with workshop)

Workshop 3:30-5:30pm $40

Down Home Guitars welcomes FLATPICKING GUITAR MAGAZINE’S Tim May & Dan Miller for an afternoon workshop and evening concert Sunday October 24th.

Tim May is the kind of guy everyone likes. He''s humorous, humble, easy-going, and fun to be around. He's also a very accomplished guitar player, singer, and songwriter—and one of Nashville's acoustic guitar ""go-to guys". For fifteen years Tim focused on his job as the guitar player for the Nashville-based bluegrass band Crucial Smith. When that band broke up in 2002 the job offers started pouring in. Recent highlights include touring with Patty Loveless, touring Japan with John Cowan, playing on the all-star Rounder project Moody Bluegrass, performing on the Grand Ole Opry with Mike Snyder, and recording a bluegrass gospel project with Charlie Daniels. Additionally, FGM Records has released Tim''s solo CD "Find My Way Back" and Tim is also featured in a new FGM Records concert DVD, "Live in Kansas City," with Brad Davis and Cody Kilby. While there are plenty of great guitar pickers in Nashville, Tim May adds great songwriting and singing to his list of many talents, which include being equally adept at resonator guitar, banjo, and mandolin. When he is not on the road or in the recording studio Tim works building and repairing stringed instruments.

Dan Miller has been the publisher and editor of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine since 1996. He has also co-authored a number of flatpicking books, including: "The Bluegrass Guitar Style of Charles Sawtelle" with Charles Sawtelle, "Flatpicking the Blues" with Brad Davis, "The Guitar Player's Guide to Developing Speed, Accuracy and Tone" with Brad Davis, and the Eight Volume flatpicking course "Flatpicking Essentials" with Tim May. Tim May and Dan Miller also have been performing in a trio with their good friend Brad Davis since 2005 and have been performing together as a duo since 2007.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 20th 2010

SpecialCHeaderII_2

7:30PM     $20

Down Home Guitars welcomes the back The Special Consensus for their annual Thanksgiving Holiday show Saturday November20th at 7:30pm

“…Special Consensus is a superb bluegrass outfit in a classic vein but with more than enough modern sensibilities to attract every ear in this now pleasantly fractionating genre. The vocals are spotless, the playing as shiny as a newly minted penny, and music like this is the reason people come to love bluegrass… Special Consensus approaches this hallowed American musical form with boundless energy and an aesthetic reverence that tickles the ribs, tugs at the heart, and puts a restless two-step in boots and bare feet. The lead cut, Signs, is emblematic of the entire [new] CD, bursting with high spirits, energy refusing to sit still, precision so tight you can set your watch by it, and pure musicality so infectious that there lives nary a soul that will be able to turn its born and bred ears from tilting leeward to get a better listen...”

THE HILLBENDERS

In Concert -Friday December 17th

7:30pm  $20

  • 2009 Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition Winners

  • 2010 Single Mic National Champs
Hillbenders

After nearly a year in the making the Springfield, MO based bluegrass sensations, The HillBenders, released their debut album “ Down To My Last Dollar” on April 16 th. Produced By Jeremy Chapman and featuring Jeremy Garrett from the Infamous Stringdusters on fiddle, this highly anticipated release is the first full length effort from the group. With 11 of the 13 tracks on the album being original compositions, The HillBenders are giving listeners a truly unique experience far from the typical bluegrass fare. Rooted in the traditions of bluegrass, the HillBenders push the boundaries of the genre by combining influences from country, rock, blues, jazz and americana into their sound to produce something entirely new. Some say it's newgrass, some say it's bluegrass, some say it's neither, but everyone says whatever it is, it's incredible! “Down To My Last Dollar” showcases some of the best The HillBenders have to offer, delivered with unwavering energy and rich, full acoustic instrumentation, and vocal arrangements on par with the best in the industry.

As one of hottest new acoustic bands in the genre today, The HillBenders are making waves. Much like the oncoming heat of summer, this young band is quickly rising above many of their peers and achieving accomplishments that veteran groups strive for. Claiming the championship title at last year’s Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition in Colorado helped put The HillBenders on the map, so to speak. Being recognized by a group as prestigious as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival is no small feat, and firmly reassured The HillBenders that they are on the right path. One look at their 2010 tour schedule reaffirms the fact that the HillBenders have become a force in their genre with coast to coast appearances at some of the country's premiere music events such as the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, the Walnut Valley Festival, Mullberry Mountain Harvest Festival, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Silver Dollar City's Bluegrass and Bar-B-Q festival and many more.
